DJ Premier is in London tonight for The Doctor’s Orders at Scala alongsidePeanut Butter Wolf and The Nextmen. He’s a very busy man but we managed to secure a brief interview with the living legend himself courtesy of The Doctor’s Orders crew. ROB: You’re decades deep in the game and have seen trends, rappers and producers come and go. What artists have you listened to consistently for that whole period of time?

Premier: Anything produced by Marley Marl, Run-DMC, Eric B. & Rakim, BDP, Tribe, Ultramagnetic MC’s,Grandmaster Flash & The Furious 5, LL Cool J, Jay Z, Drake, Kanye.

ROB: There is a wave of new artists coming out making great music but are there any artists that we may not have heard of that you think are a great prospect for the future?

Premier: Sy Ari, Dynasty, Rapsody, Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Jon Connor, Khaleel, Jakk Frost, Young Maylay.

ROB: What projects are there on the horizon from yourself?

Premier: Busta Rhymes, Slaughterhouse, Immortal Technique, Rapsody, NYGz, Khaleel, Jadakiss, A.G., Lady Of Rage, MC Eiht, Kool Sphere.

ROB: We’re assuming you have a vast amount of unreleased music. Should we expect another volume of Beats That Collected Dust and if so when?

Premier: I am doing Beats That Collected Dust vol. 3.

ROB: Guru‘s death left a hole in the heart of rap music. Any possibility of posthumous material as Gang Starr?

Premier: There will be a few things coming.

ROB: What was it like working in the studio with the new and very talented kid on the block Joey Bada$$?

Premier: Great student of the game.  He’s always willing to listen and learn from his O.G.’s.  Shouts to his Pro Era crew.

ROB: Fat Joe released Your Honour with yourself on the production. You guys go way back and you’ve done production on a few of his joints, how did you start working together way back when?

Premier: Me and Guru met Joe through Showbiz and Lord Finesse in 1989. I lived in The Bronx at the time so we all hung out a lot Diamond D, A.G. and Big L. It was nothing to do a jam with any of them since we had that kind of relationship as friends.

NEW DJ PREMIER 2013 INTERVIEW

What's the latest on your album and what should your fans look forward to you from you in 2013? I have my label Year Round Records and I also have my production company Works Of Mart Inc. Me and Bumpy Knuckles dropped an LP back in March 27, 2012 called :Kolexxxion” and we toured all over Europe in September and October of that year. We will do domestic shows to support it soon. I also am releasing for the first time consistently albums and EP's from artists such as MC Eiht whose EP “Keep it Hood” was just released on January 4, 2013. We will share his label Blue Stamp Music and my company Works of Mart and release the full length LP “Which Way Iz West”. Also I have a group out of the Gang Starr Foundation from the Bronx and uptown Manhattan called NYGz, and they will drop before summer. I have an artist from Houston, Texas named Khaleel, he will be dropping an EP in a few weeks and then an LP this summer called “Already.” Then there's D.I.T.C Inc. with Showbiz producing most of the project to showcase the younger generation of spitters that run circles around these popular radio rappers musically and lyrically. Then I am working with Lady of Rage, Joey Bada$$, Dynasty, Immortal Technique, Kool Sphere of Verbal Threat, E. Hart, Bumpy Knuckles and O.C.LP, and the highly anticipated Peter Rock vs. Premier LP. I stays busy.

If there was a biopic made about your life, what actor would play you, who would direct it and who would some of the cast of characters in the film be? To play me would be either my twin brother Talib Kweli, Martin Lawrence, that's off the top of the head. I would get John Singleton or F. Gary Gray to direct it. The rest of the characters would be my true friends old and young. They are the most bugged out group of people that I consider loved ones. I don't want a biopic done on me though. I'm happy that people recognize my gift and I just will keep giving them music and I am fine with just that. Guru had many timeless lyrics, but if you had to choose just one of verses, what would your favorite Guru verse of all time be? I could never pick just one great Guru verse. He has way too many great ones. If you asked me for a few answers to that question, then I could answer it, but since you didn't ask...... Talk about the love you have for hip hop culture and music in general? What more is there to say? I'm 46, and I was here way before the culture started, so I wholeheartedly understand the mechanics of Hip Hop from every element from Breaking, DJ-ing, MC-ing, Beatboxing, Graffiti and all of the music that we had before Hip Hop existed. When are you at your creative best and what keeps you driven? I am at my creative best when I hear dope shit and when I hear wack shit. I'm inspired either way to make a banger. I'm guessing it's very important for you to “back-up” all your music and sound files. When was the last time your computer crashed on you where you lost music? It is a MUST to back up everything and I definitely do that. I recently was in Hawaii for a wedding and I was in my hotel room on my day off re-dumping files to my new laptop it took a long time and I still am not done updating it, but at least I have ALL of my files. Photobucket You list scoring a film as something you want to accomplish. How has reaching that goal been coming along? I dream of getting that opportunity and I am still waiting for it, but in the meantime I have plenty of work to do. You've said that you would have no problem working on a a Miley Cyrus or Justin Beiber record, would you ever do an electronica record? If so, what would it sound like, what sounds would you incorporate and would it have a hip hop feel since that's the culture you came from? If I did an electronic record, it would have the elements of what's popular now but it would still be unique where it would have no problem standing out amongst the current popular ones that bang in the clubs. I always want to be unique and different with my work. I might just do that style of music and release it under an alias. Back in the day, hip hop was more rooted in story telling, the struggle and the streets, where emcees seem to put time and emphasis on the lyrics as well as the message. Whereas some may say it isn't so much the case today. Is that the fault of the artists of today or just a result of the generation they came from? It is not the artists fault. The industry and radio have made rap music very corporate and watered down. You seem to “give back” hip hop a great deal and “naturally” educate the younger generations, as an ambassador even a professor in some cases, if you will, why is it important for you to give back and teach? It is important to give back because I love the Hip Hop culture. I DJ, produce and I'm a recording artist because those are the jobs within the culture that I am qualified to do at a high level. Correctly. I respect the founding fathers and sisters of this culture and refuse to misrepresent it in a bad way. I forever live Hip Hop.

Good man, all is well, just lounging at the Nas rehearsal at the VEVO awards that he is doing with Pete Rock. Pete is on the turntables interrupting my interview. Shouts out to Pete say what’s up to everybody Pete: What it do! March 27th you have your new album entitled Kolexxion dropping with Bumpy Knuckles. Tell me a little bit about how the project came together for the both of you. Really it is called Kolexxion because it is a collection of songs that we did together since 2005, 2006. That includes the Nas record, Turn Up The Mic, that is from 2006 and it was released already as a single, but we just redid the track. There are also alot of updated and newer beats on the album as well and I sent those to Bumpy to see if he was feeling them and wanted to add new songs to the project. He ended up using all of the beats and I told him let’s just go ahead and make this a official album. The Nas track I just went back then and redid the beat, even though lyrics wise it is from 2006 and give it a more modern sound. I mean he was talking about being married on the track and he is not married anymore, but for me history is history. It’s not so much what you think of it as it is about what you do with history and we decided to embrace it and touch it up a bit. There are 8 new beats that no one has heard before that were made for other artists. We have The Life, which was on a 12 inch that I dropped years ago. The Key is on there, P.A.I.N.E., these are older tracks and then we just took the newer ones and mixed them all together. After this album what is next for you and your label, Year Round Records? The NYG’z are next, they are dropping a album. It’s called Hustler’s Union, Dom produced the whole album and I am really happy and excited for this album. This is that gritty, street New York sounding album that really sounds like the city. It is not on that bring NY back tip, it just sounds like the city, musically and lyrically. I also have a artist from Houston, Texas named Khaleel. He has a album coming out entitled Already and I also have Teflon from M.O.P. 1st Family. This is a album he had back when he was on Def Jam years ago and we gave it a tune up and a face lift to it. The album will have Joell Ortiz, Styles P, Saigon, Jaguar Wright, Krumb Snatcha are all on it. The album is called Contraband and it will drop through my label and Works Of Mart production company as well. Year Round Records is geared more towards newer artists and Works Of Mart for the vets. Lady Of Rage will also be coming out and that will be on Works Of Mart. Me and Pete Rock are also doing a album together, it’s a battle album so we are working on that. I did 2 joints for Busta Rhymes new album, which he just called me yesterday and said he wants another beat, I am working on a Slaughterhouse joint right now as we speak. Did I miss anybody? Umm Immortal Technique, 38 Special, look out for him, he is from Rochester, New York, my man Kool Sphere from Verbal Threat, Inspectah Deck from the Wu Tang we got a joint that is popping. In a recent interview with XXLMag.com, DJ Premier revealed that he has a disc’s worth of unreleased Gang Starr songs as well as hours of video footage that he plans to edit for commercial release.

According to Preem, he has at least five songs with Guru, and there are people overseas that are willing to give him around eight songs to remix. “There are guys in Europe who say that they have seven or eight,” he said. “It’s songs he did with them and they never finished it and they said I can have them. They reached out and were like, As long as you’re doing it. You can have the vocals. They are all brand new, from like a year and a half ago. I listened to them and I’ll make them shits sound like we were together. Well, we will be together because spiritually, he’s with me for the rest of my life.”

Along with the CD of new music, he is currently editing thousands of hours of video footage that he plans to put together for an accompanying DVD. “I have footage from the very first show we ever performed,” he shared. “It was Ice-T, Queen Latifah and Monie Love. She was in the bathroom nervous trying to remember her rhymes for ‘Ladies First.’ Special Ed told her it would be ok and then Monie Love killed it. It was us, Tribe, Latifah and then Ice-T. Ice T introduced me to a DAT machine. I was like, ‘Wow.’ This was 1989. I have that tape.”

“I’m putting together a Gang Starr DVD because I’ve been filming since 1989,” he continued. “I did all the filming until 1993. Then I started bringing guys with me. I have hundreds and hundreds of tapes of me and Guru arguing in the airport. Him and Shug fighting. Guru tried fighting everyone. Now, you look at it and it’s like, Damn, I miss that.”

This morning cipha and rosenberg chopped it up about this statement released to the public and picked up by many outlets… the duo go in on the “letter” that was written by guru. i did the same thing yesterday morning, from about 9:30 to noon. after countless explanations to friends on aim and gchat, going over the same points, over and over, i had to get up and go for a walk. straight up fuming. more i thought about it, more i wanted to find this chump and yoke ‘im up. homey needs a donnybrooking stat. i can’t even believe how infuriating it is to deal with this ish when you’re trying to get past a friend’s passing… but i feel the need to publish my anger, so gu, forgive me, i’m tryna let you rest, but i ain’t feelin your mans. so, without further ado, my 2 cents:

lotta suspect shit going on in here. first of all, the opening statement. like ciph and rosenberg said, anyone who starts a letter like that? is suspect as fuck. usually, there’s a cop and a lawyer standing around when you start writing ish like that. now, to further my point, guru was a man with a very unique diction. and his style of writing was almost completely the same as his style of speech. in short, dude don’t talk or write like that. ever.

then, we have the point where “guru” “writes”, “I have had a long battle with cancer and have succumbed to the disease.” so… he died? peep this, guru was in grad school before he dropped out to be a rapper, and has always been extremely eloquent. a wordsmith in the truest fashion. the man was deliberate about the words he chose, and in a situation this serious? i know he would’ve chosen wiser.

now we go onto this supposed foundation. fuck, miss info goes in on that one. but for those interested, a brand new website has popped up since her initial research. seriously, try to alexa some web stats, there’s no history… sketchy.

what bugs me, about this particular paragraph is the mention of kc, guru’s son. guru, as long as i have known him, was an extremely spiritual and very loving dude. but to mention your mans solar 3 times, while mentioning his son, “the love of [his] life”, only once… and pretty much… only to give custody to solar… it just doesn’t add up. oh, and then of course, if there were any tributes or awards coming to guru in death, he mentions that solar will take care of it all, to be given to his son at a later age… word??? who thinks about awards and tributes on their deathbed? that’s more what a super producer would be thinking about as his main cash cow rapper is fading in front of his eyes, whaaaat? who said that?

now… the last paragraph

the one that really makes me want to go out and kick babies in the head. “my ex-dj.” first of all… guru was a man. never did i doubt that. and as a man, not a coward, i know that even if he wanted to continue this rift in the afterlife, he would address him by name. i only know one dude who is allergic to the uttering of the word ‘premier’ and that is… the superest producer of all. now, even more fishy… this paragraph goes from addressing premo and gang starr as a brand into what i can only call, a solar fan letter. he discusses jazzmatazz 4 in particluar, multiple times. now… me being a bit of a conspiracy theorist, these multiple shout outs of jazzmatazz 4 raise mad red flags. why you ask? see in the music industry, unfortunately, when people pass… their music sells. you woulda been shocked to see how many people didn’t have the thriller album until after mj passed, the soundscan spike was out of hand. jazzmatazz 4 was released on 7 grand, which is owned now, solely by solar. so all proceeds from the sales? go to solar. then the rest of the paragraph basically reads, solar solar solar solar solar… solar.

real talk people, this is not a letter written by guru to his fans. this was a letter written (poorly might i add) by some shitty publicist (probably at yo! pr, shame on you people… shame) with solar injecting his creative genius for his own money. lets be real. what is solar most famous for? putting guru on autotune. which really, doesn’t even make sense mathematically. put a notoriously monotone mc, whose famous for his monotone delivery, on a fucking vocoder filter? da fuck you gonna filter? one tone? jackass. and really, never trust a producer who refers to himself as a “superproducer”. that dude is the wackest person in the game ever, who the fuck body snatches a corpse and threatens to cremate a man before his family even has a chance to pay their respects or even see the remains (i hear the family recovered gu’s body earlier today, shit is like a fucking telenovella)? who the fuck is already talking about doing tribute shows for their own profitable gain? that’s some creepy ass, sketchy ass, fraudlent, foul shit dude. i feel sorry for your mother.

and i’m calling it right now, this fuckstick is going to start selling gang starr merchandise in 2 weeks, pitch his biography to publishers in 3, then next year, he’ll try to pitch a movie. and i’ll put money on that. go head, bet me. i dare you.

The Elam family wishes to thank the fans of our son/brother/father uncle/nephew/cousin Keith aka GURU for the outpouring of love, concern and support.

Our hearts are broken by the loss of someone we loved so much. GURU was devoted to his young son, who will most keenly feel his absence.

GURU suffered from multiple myeloma for over a year. Accrued complications from this illness led to respiratory failure and cardiac arrest. As a result, GURU was in a coma from mid February until his death and never regained consciousness. Early on the morning of April 19^th, he became hypertensive due to low blood pressure. He again went into cardiac arrest and slipped away from us.

GURU died far too young but he was, and we are, proud of all his many legendary musical contributions.

With the above info coming from Guru's family, then how is it possible that Guru published to the media these "so-called" last statements on his health, and negative shots towards Dj Premier???

The answer, is the fame hungry devil Solar who has been up to these devilish acts from day one. Lets hope that more than karma will catch up to this fucken asshole. I'm still sick to my stomach over the loss of Guru and to keep his family away from someone on their death bed and playing tricks thru the media is incomprehensible. I will follow up soon with a more in depth write up of his influence on me personally, Verbal Threat, and hip-hop as a whole. This is a very sad time for me, hip-hop, Verbal Threat, of course The Gangstarr foundation, and first and foremost the Elam Family.

GURU FROM GANGSTARR

I'm usually always on the run and my attention span is equivalent to a 5 year old, but I must take some time out to speak on my man Guru. He is currently fighting for his life after having a heart attack and just got out of surgery. I'm praying as well as the "real" hip-hop community for a speedy recovery.

Although a lot of cats front pretending to be down with Gangstarr since day one, claiming that they've been following the movement since Manifest..cmon son. But for me, the impact came once Step In The Arena hit stores. Days before downloading from the internet, you had to search out real shit. I remember hearing the song Step in The Arena and getting amped, the track was banging, Guru's lyrics were sick, but for me, the scratches that Premier hit every song with had me addicted. Ever since the days of hearing songs like UTFO's "Leader of the Pack" Run DMC's "Jam Master Jay" songs that had heavy scratches caught my interest. (I guess I should have been a djay) I religiously picked up every Gangstarr album since then, and felt connected to their music and movement.

Step in the Arena, Daily Operation, Hard To Earn, Group Home, Jeru all came out around this time period when hip-hop was at it's peak (in my opinion) Stretch Armstrong & Bobbito, Mayhem & Sunset NYC College radio was in effect, all those classic Big L radio rips you hear now on youtube, us New Yorkers were hearing him get busy LIVE, amazed at the direction the underground was going at that time. Hip-hop's code of ethics was enforced and corn ball rap wasn't tolerated as it is now. My mind state is still in that era, it impacted me soo much I refuse to be brainwashed with whats going on now, not like the rest of you. But for me, Gangstarr set the standard for that movement. They're music spoke volumes, without talking shit, Gangstarr's music put suckers (and the industry) in their place. I remember visiting Los Angeles right when Moment of Truth dropped, and Power 106 had Gangstarr on as a special guest. I remember the radio djays commented saying.."Gangstarr is in the building, and that the vibe in the studio was extremely serious." Just the appearance of Guru and Premier together on the scene gave off the vibe that its time for Real Shit, no bullshit.

In the background, Verbal Threat (Kool Sphere & M.C. Reppond) we were making our moves on the underground scene, but never wanted to be associated with anyone ever other than Gangstarr. For us, they were the perfect definition of what true hip-hop is. As years passed, things happened for a reason, and we were connected to Guru and Premier on several occasions..to eventually going on tour with Guru and of course recording the classic track "Reality Check" with Dj Premier.

So with all that being said, we're REALLY pulling for Guru's safe return back to perfect health, to his family, and finally back to music.
